What is a packable?

Packables are items that pack into themselves or into a separate case or bag that, when packed, compresses or greatly reduces the volume of the item from when it is in use.

What’s so great about packables?

Packables are particularly useful when traveling. They allow you to pack your essentials in as little space as possible leaving more room for the things you really want to bring. Ever since I’ve discovered packables, I’ve been obsessed with finding the best which would actually make my travel life easier. Here are 7 essential packables I don’t leave home without:

1. Tote Bag

In my opinion, Tumi makes some of, if not the best, travel gear around. It may not be the sexiest or cheapest, but it is classic, well thought out, and extremely durable. There is, of course, a place for less expensive items, but if you want something that will last forever that you won’t have a desire or need to upgrade for at least 10 years, I highly recommend Tumi. This very roomy Just in Case tote stays in my carry-on at all times and comes on all my trips. It’s come in handy as a beach bag, day trip bag, and extra space to bring back souvenirs on the return trip. I’ve had it for at least 5 years, and it still looks brand new.

2. Backpack

This is the newest addition to my Tumi collection. I loved the Just in Case tote, so getting this was a no-brainer. This Just in Case backpack looks just as sleek and professional as the Just in Case Tote and will be perfect for work trips and day trips.

3. Raincoat

The last thing you want on a trip is to be slowed down due to rain. I’ve had several cute packable raincoats which always left me more than a little damp until I finally learned there is a huge difference between “water-resistant” and “waterproof.” In addition to being waterproof, you want your raincoat to have vented seams otherwise you’ll feel like you’re boiling alive (ask me how I know). This North Face raincoat is waterproof, packable, and has zippered vented seams. When not traveling, I regularly throw this in my purse or car.

4. Blanket

Planes aren’t great at temperature regulation, and I expect to find myself freezing at some point in my journey. I used to wrap myself in an enormous bulky scarf on the plane until I came across packable travel blankets. These types of blankets are relatively thin but actually pretty warm. I found mine at Marshall’s years ago but found this similar one on Amazon.

5. Neck Pillow

If you’ve ever searched for “best travel pillows,” this Cabeau pillow has likely come up and with good reason. It has 4.5 stars with over 3,000 reviews on Amazon. Not only is it comfortable, it can also be attached to your seat with straps. As an added bonus, you can clip the case onto your bag and it won’t take up precious space in your carry-on or personal item because. While many travel pillows can be clipped directly onto your bag, who really wants to have their uncovered neck pillow rubbing up on gross surfaces everywhere in the airport?

6. Laundry Bag

There comes a time in every frequent traveler’s life when they get tired of figuring out what to do with their dirty clothes during and returning from their trip. I used to have to rely on the flimsy hotel laundry bag (which was not always present), try to save a bag I obtained during the trip, or remember to bring my own. I stumbled upon a reusable laundry bag that folds up into nothing, and now I’m never scrambling to find a bag on my trip.

7. Toiletry Bag

Okay, it’s debatable on whether a toiletry bag can truly be considered a packable, but it is undeniably useful. This Tumi toiletry bag is surprisingly spacious considering it’s small footprint.
