8 Ways to Incorporate Self-Care Into Your Workday
While we often think of it as something we do in our downtime to relax, self-care is actually any activity that we might undertake for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It should not be banished to the weekends or our free time but should be something we incorporate into our daily routines. Here are 8 ways you can incorporate self-care during your workday which is a big part of our daily life:
Plan out the next day
A big work stressor is feeling overwhelmed with all you have to do. A helpful way to lessen this stress is to plan your workday on the previous day. Instead of starting your day by planning it out, we recommend looking at your calendar and To-Do list at the end of the previous day and make a plan of action then. That way you can start your workday off purposefully and intentionally, you don’t have to worry about it when you’re off work or in the morning. We’ve talked about why we love lists and plans before, and this is the perfect opportunity to use them.
Schedule your lunch break
Many of us often find ourselves eating lunch at our desks. If you find yourself constantly making excuses for getting up from your desk or if work meetings are scheduled during the time you typically would take lunch, consider blocking off your calendar at least a few times a week to ensure you have the opportunity to take a lunch break. Even if you only have 10-15 minutes, it can make a world of difference to get away from your screen and desk.
Go for a walk
Speaking of exercising, going for a walk is an easy way to get moving during the day and to calm your mind. If you’re stressed out at work, taking even a 5-minute walk is a guaranteed way to reduce your stress. If you’re not stressed, you should still take walks. While 10,000 steps a day is an arbitrary goal (and the result of a very successful marketing strategy not validated by science), movement and walking every day are both physically and physiologically beneficial.
Stay hydrated
Not only is hydration a helpful way to force yourself to take regular breaks throughout the day (all of that water has to go somewhere), but staying hydrated is essential for human health. If you experience energy slumps or headaches during the day, you may want to make sure you’re getting enough water or other forms of hydration.
Have “tea time”
Take time in your day for a pause. Work can be hectic, so you need those moments of intentional calm throughout the day for balance. I love tea, but if you aren’t a tea drinker, maybe you can use this time for a brief meditation or an opportunity to enjoy a snack.
Invest in your workspace
Whether you work from home or in an office, if you have your own workspace, invest in making it comfortable. It can be as affordable as simply adding plants (fake or real) or as expensive as a full ergonomic setup. Let your budget and needs guide your investment.
Stay connected with loved ones
You can’t and shouldn’t completely shut off who you are outside of work while you’re at work, so it’s important to make time for family and friends during the day. I don’t suggest spending your whole workday on the phone but take time to share a funny meme or send a quick text to loved ones when you take a break. They will appreciate the connection and that you are thinking of them.
Dress the part
I’m not necessarily speaking of dressing for the job you want, but rather, dressing in a way that makes you feel good. Make sure you are dressing in a manner that makes you comfortable and happy and has the appropriate level of professionalism for the type of work you do.
